4 Methods — Windows 11 Search Settings Guide
Start from Method 1 (fastest/easiest) and work down until your issue is resolved
📂
Method 1
Enhanced vs Classic Indexing Mode
Settings → Privacy & Security → Searching Windows → Find My Files
✅ Easy⏱️ 2 min
The single most impactful Search setting. Classic mode indexes only common folders (Desktop, Documents, Pictures). Enhanced mode indexes your ENTIRE drive — so every file becomes searchable, at the cost of slightly more disk usage and a longer initial index build.
Open Settings (Win+I) → Privacy & security → Searching Windows
Under Find my files, see Classic vs Enhanced options
Select Enhanced to index all drives and all folders
A progress bar appears — indexing completes in 15–60 min
Switch back to Classic anytime to reduce disk/CPU usage
📍
Method 2
Manage Indexed Locations
Settings → Searching Windows → Add an excluded folder / Control Panel → Indexing Options
✅ Easy⏱️ 3 min
Add custom folders to the search index or exclude specific folders (like temp files or private directories) from appearing in search results. Fine-tune exactly what Windows can and can't find.
Open Settings → Privacy & security → Searching Windows
Under Excluded Folders, click Add an excluded folder
Browse and select any folder to hide from all searches
For full control: open Control Panel → Indexing Options → Modify
Check/uncheck specific locations — click OK to save changes
Control what data Windows Search sends to Microsoft, whether Bing Safe Search is applied to web results, and whether your search history is stored in the Cloud. Recommended to review these settings on any new Windows 11 installation.
Open Settings → Privacy & security → Search permissions
Under SafeSearch, choose Strict, Moderate, or Off
Under Cloud content search, toggle Microsoft account and Work/School account
Under History, toggle Search history on this device on or off
Click Clear device search history to wipe all local search history immediately
💡
Method 4
Search Highlights On/Off
Settings → Privacy & Security → Searching Windows → Show Search Highlights
✅ Easy⏱️ 30 sec
Search Highlights shows Bing-powered daily content (anniversaries, trending topics, facts) in the search panel. Many users prefer to disable this to keep search clean and ad-free.
Open Settings → Privacy & security → Searching Windows
Scroll down to find More settings section
Toggle Show search highlights Off (turns the panel plain/clean)
Changes take effect immediately — no restart needed
Toggle back On anytime to restore the daily highlights content

Classic mode only indexes common user folders (Desktop, Documents, Downloads, Pictures, Videos). Enhanced mode indexes your entire C: drive and any additional drives — making every file searchable. Enhanced uses slightly more disk space for the index but dramatically improves search completeness.
Go to Settings → Privacy & security → Searching Windows → scroll to Excluded Folders → click Add an excluded folder → select the folder you want to hide from search. Files in excluded folders will not appear in any Windows Search results.
Press Win + I to open Settings → click Privacy & security → click Searching Windows. This page controls indexing mode, excluded folders, and search highlights. Search Permissions (privacy/Bing settings) are a separate item also under Privacy & security.
Go to Settings → Privacy & security → Search permissions → under Microsoft Search in Bing, toggle off your account to stop Bing web results appearing in Start/Search. For a complete removal, a registry edit (DisableSearchBoxSuggestions = 1 in HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows) is more reliable.
Enhanced indexing uses more CPU and disk during the initial build (15–60 min) but has minimal ongoing impact once complete. On modern SSDs, the index is stored efficiently and background indexing is barely noticeable. On older HDDs with many files, there can be occasional brief slowdowns.
Go to Settings → Privacy & security → Searching Windows → scroll down → click Restore default settings for Search. Alternatively, rebuild the index (Control Panel → Indexing Options → Advanced → Rebuild) to reset the index while keeping your folder settings.
