Windows 11 Search History Guide — Complete Guide
Every time you search in Windows 11, your queries can be saved in two places: locally on your device, and (if you're signed in with a Microsoft account) in your Microsoft account's activity history in the cloud. This means your search queries could be visible to others who use your PC, or accessible to Microsoft. This guide covers how to view, clear, and permanently disable Windows 11 search history on both your device and your Microsoft account.

4 Methods — Windows 11 Search History Guide
Start from Method 1 (fastest/easiest) and work down until your issue is resolved
Deletes all locally stored search query history from your device instantly. Does NOT affect Microsoft account cloud history. Essential for shared PCs or before lending your computer to someone.
Open Settings (Win+I) → Privacy & security
Click Search permissions in the list
Scroll down to History section
Click Clear device search history button
Confirmation appears — history is deleted immediately
🚫
Method 2
Disable Device Search History
Settings → Privacy & Security → Search Permissions → History toggle Off
✅ Easy⏱️ 30 sec
Stops Windows 11 from saving any new search queries locally. Previous history is NOT cleared by this toggle — you must also click 'Clear device search history' to remove existing history.
Open Settings → Privacy & security → Search permissions
Find the History section
Toggle Search history on this device to Off
Windows stops recording new searches immediately
Also click Clear device search history below to remove existing history
☁️
Method 3
Clear Microsoft Account Search Activity
account.microsoft.com → Privacy → Activity history → Search history
✅ Easy⏱️ 2 min
If signed in with a Microsoft account, Windows 11 also stores search activity in the cloud. Clear this from Microsoft's privacy dashboard at account.microsoft.com for complete removal.
Open a browser → go to account.microsoft.com
Sign in with your Microsoft account → click Privacy
Click Activity history → select Search history from the list
Click Clear all search history → confirm the deletion
Optionally turn off 'Allow Microsoft to store my search history'
🔒
Method 4
Disable Cloud Search History (Microsoft Account)
Settings → Privacy & Security → Search Permissions → Microsoft account history toggle Off
✅ Easy⏱️ 30 sec
Prevents Windows 11 from syncing search queries to your Microsoft account in the cloud. Only affects new searches after the toggle is turned off — does not delete existing cloud history.
Open Settings → Privacy & security → Search permissions
Under Cloud content search, find Microsoft account toggle
Toggle it Off — cloud search history sync stops immediately
Repeat for Work or School account toggle if applicable
Visit account.microsoft.com to delete any existing cloud history

Windows 11 search history is stored in two places: locally on your device (in a SQLite database under AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\ConnectedSearchHistory) and, if you're signed in with a Microsoft account, in your account's cloud activity history at account.microsoft.com.
Press Win+S to open the Search panel → the Recent searches appear automatically below the search bar when no query is typed. These are your most recent device-level search queries. Full history can be viewed at account.microsoft.com → Privacy → Activity history → Search history.
No — toggling off 'Search history on this device' only stops recording new searches. To also remove existing history, click the 'Clear device search history' button in the same Settings page (Settings → Privacy & security → Search permissions → History).
If you're signed in with a Microsoft account and cloud search history is enabled, yes — Microsoft stores your local Windows search queries. You can view and delete this data at account.microsoft.com → Privacy → Activity history. Disabling the Microsoft account toggle in Search permissions stops future cloud storage.
Go to Settings → Privacy & security → Search permissions → turn off 'Search history on this device'. This stops Windows from storing search queries locally. For Bing web search suggestions, also toggle off your Microsoft account under Cloud content search.
No — Windows 11 Search history and File Explorer Quick Access Recent Files are separate systems. Clearing search history (in Search permissions) does not clear File Explorer's Recent Files list. To clear File Explorer history: open File Explorer → three-dot menu → Options → General → Clear under Privacy.
